Virat Kohli Records

Born on 5th November 1988, Virat Kohli is one of the most revered names in the world cricket today. In a career span of 10 years, he has achieved greater heights than what the greats of the game couldn’t do in their entire career.
Virat Kohli, the captain of Indian cricket team in all formats likes to lead from the front and always sets a high bar for other players. He has worked on his fitness level over the years which has brought a noticeable change in his game. He has seen his fair share of failure but never refrained from accepting his weaknesses and conquering them. The recent tour to England is the biggest example.

To honor this genius, let us have a look at the 30 Records he holds in International Cricket before actually turning 30 years of age on November 5th, 2018.

  1. Fastest to score 7000 runs as a Captain. During the first test match against England, in his 124th innings, Virat became the fastest to score 7000 runs as a captain across all the formats. While doing so, he leapfrogged Brian Lara who achieved this landmark in his 164th innings.
  2. Fastest to score 3000 runs in ODIs as a Captain. Virat is the quickest to score 3000 runs in ODIs as a Captain. He scored these runs in just 49 innings - 11 innings less than his RCB teammate AB De Villiers who scored 3000 runs in 60 innings as a Captain.
  3. Most Runs in an ODI Bilateral Series. When South Africa traveled India in 2015, they won the series by beating India 3-2. Two years later, it was India’s turn to prove itself which needed a special performance by the Indian skipper. Virat came to the party and how! He amassed 558 runs in the 6-match series at a mind-boggling average of 186 with three 100s to his name. Fakhar Zaman, the Pakistani opener is the next in the list with 515 runs to his name in a 5-match series against Zimbabwe.
  4. Fastest 100 in ODIs by an Indian Batsman. It was the winter of 2013 when Indian fans witnessed a high scoring series between India and Australia. India had already lost the first ODI after failing to chase a score of 304. The series moved to Jaipur and India had to chase 360 to level the series after a poor bowling performance. Indian openers started well and by the time Shikhar Dhawan got out, India already had 176 runs on board, with 184 to chase in just under 24 overs. Kohli walked in to join Rohit Sharma. He took on the attack from the first ball and kept smashing Australian bowlers all around the park. Virat created history in this match by scoring a 52 ball 100, thus breaking the record of his Delhi teammate Virender Sehwag who had scored the 100 in 60 balls.
  5. Fastest to 9000 ODI Runs. While scoring a quick fire 113 and taking India to a match-winning total of 337 runs, Virat became the fastest man to score 9000 ODI runs on 17th October 2017.
  6. Most Centuries while chasing in ODIs. 21 of Virat’s 35 centuries have been made while chasing. 19 of these 21 centuries have come in winning cause, which is also the most number of centuries in a winning cause while chasing. Second in the list is none other than the god of cricket – Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 17 centuries while chasing.
  7. Most Double Centuries in Tests as a Captain. Virat has scored 6 double centuries in his test career so far- all of them while executing the captaincy. He broke the record previously held by Brian Lara at his home ground with his career-best score (243) against Sri Lanka.
  8. 3 Centuries in First 3 Innings as a Captain. Virat became the first captain to score 3 consecutive centuries in first 3 innings as captain. He scored 115 and 141 in the first test against Australia in Adelaide and 147 in the fourth test in Sydney. He rates the 2nd innings 141 as his best test century till date.
  9. Most Runs by an Indian in a Calendar Year. 2017 went down as one of the best years of Indian Cricket, especially for Virat Kohli. Virat amassed a total of 2818 Runs in 2017 surpassing Rahul Dravid’s tally of 2626 Runs which he scored in the year 1999. Overall, he is ranked third after Kumar Sangakkara (2868 in 2014) and Ricky Ponting (2833 in 2005). With the kind of form Virat is in, it won’t be surprising if he is the first batsman to break into the 3000-Club in 2019.
  10. Most Centuries in a Calendar Year as a Captain. In 2017, Virat scored a total of 11 centuries across all formats, a feat never achieved by any captain before him. As a batsman, only Sachin Tendulkar (12) has scored more centuries in a calendar year than Virat.

In 16 innings which he played, he scored a whopping 973 runs for RCB. He was well in course of scoring 1000 runs in the season and taking RCB to their maiden title before he was bowled by Barinder Saran at the score of 52.
  20. Most Centuries in an IPL Season. Virat scored four centuries in IPL Season 9. Two of them (100 and 109) coming against Gujarat Lions, one (108) against Rising Pune Supergiants, and one (113) against Kings XI Punjab.

It was the year when he created the record for most runs (1424) in ODIs as Captain in a calendar year only to be broken 10 years later by Virat Kohli, who scored 1460 runs in 2017 as captain of the Indian Cricket Team. Interestingly it was the first year as full-time ODI Captain for Virat.
  24. Most Runs in a Calendar year in T20Is. Virat holds the record of scoring most number of runs in a calendar year in T20 Internationals. He scored 641 Runs in 13 innings with 7 half centuries and an astonishing average of 106.83 in the year 2016. Virat is the only batsman to breach the 600 mark in a calendar year in T20Is.
  25. Back to Back ‘Player of the Series’ Awards in ICC World T20Is. Virat has won the player of the series awards in two consecutive World Cups in 2014 and 2016. 26. Fastest to Score 28 Centuries as Captain. Virat has an exceptional conversion rate as Captain. In 108 innings, he has crossed 48 times (ODIs + Tests) and has converted 28 of those into 100s. 28. Most Innings before Recording a Duck. The modern master broke the world record for playing the most innings before recording a duck in T20Is. He recorded his maiden T20I duck after 47 innings, playing in his 52nd T20I.

  30. Led India to its Longest Unbeaten Streak in Tests. As the skipper of the team, Virat led India to its longest unbeaten streak of 18 test matches. In the process, the Indian team broke their previous such streak of 17 matches. The streak started with a win over Sri Lanka at Galle in August 2015 and ended in December 2016 when they defeated England by 75 Runs.
These are the 30 records individually held by Virat before he turns 30 years of age. There are many other records that he shares with other Indian or International players. The cricket Chanakayas say that the window of 28 years to 32 years of age is the best time for the batsman and he gets to the peak of his career. Virat has proven this to be right and is about to reach only half of this time period. The other half still remains for him to make and break many more records.

We wish Virat reaches half a century of his records soon and we get to share another interesting piece with you soon!

If you feel we have missed out on some records, please share them with us in the comment section.

Fall of an Empire

-Atul Agarwal It was a bright sunny afternoon in Johannesburg on the 23 rd day of March, 2003, and millions of Indians back home were glued to their television sets, hoping that the Men in Blue beat all odds stacked up against them. However, the Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting had different plans. His knock of 140 off 121 balls was enough to send us in deep sense of melancholy. The sound of the ball hitting the meat of the bat before flying over the stands still reverberates in our ears. It wasn’t that the Indian Cricket Team struggled this way throughout the tournament on their road to the finals. They were one of the most dominating sides in the competition. In their defence, they were up against the most dominating cricketing nation of the generation. They were the mighty Australians! Fast forward fifteen years, in the ongoing Test match against India in Adelaide, the Aussies seem to have lost all traces of the aggressive outlook, which made them the powerhouse of world

Glory will be ours, or will it be?

- Atul Agarwal With four months remaining for the World Cup 2019, each of the ten cricket boards is busy trying to figure out the perfect combination of fifteen odd men who’d be flying to England for the grandest tournament of the cricketing arena. While each team has some people who’ve almost booked a slot, there are others who’ve been facing the axes muscly swung by their national selectors ahead of their respective bilateral ODI series.   Selection of a team has never been more difficult before, with the onset of far too many players emerging from the domestic T20 and One Day leagues. While there are ten teams contending for the coveted glory, cricket aficionados have already declared their verdict that the two teams that should make it to the finals are England and India. However, reality, like always, is far from the truth. Despite being the co-favourites, the Indian selection board and the team management have been having the toughest of times in picking their est
